Should Novi Sad be a day trip or overnight stop?

Clear turquoise water flowing over a low natural ledge at Krupajsko Vrelo in Serbia.

A day trip works, but an overnight lets Novi Sad stop feeling like an errand from Belgrade. Stay if you want cafés, the Danube and a slower evening; day-trip if your Serbia time is tight.

Answer

Novi Sad is easy enough to visit from Belgrade, which is exactly why people under-allocate it. A day trip gives you the centre, the fortress and a sense of Vojvodina’s softer mood. An overnight gives you a better city: dinner without clock-watching, morning streets before the day-trippers settle in, and the option to fold in Sremski Karlovci or Fruška Gora without sprinting. The right answer depends on your whole Serbia route. If you have only a few days, day-trip. If you have a week and want the trip to breathe, stay the night.
