Serbia’s transport is not one story. Belgrade to Novi Sad is the cleanest visitor corridor and often the easiest place to travel without a car. Buses remain important for many intercity routes, but timetables, station locations and comfort can vary, so the plan needs checking rather than wishful thinking. A rental car is not necessary for a city-focused trip, and it can be a nuisance in Belgrade. It becomes valuable when the route points toward Tara, Uvac, Đerdap, scattered monasteries, viewpoints or villages where public transport is thin. Choose the transport after choosing the trip, not before.
