Do you need a rental car in Serbia?
Not for Belgrade and Novi Sad, but probably for the Serbia many travellers imagine beyond them. If the plan includes Tara, Uvac, Đerdap, monasteries or scattered villages, a car can turn a difficult route into a real trip.

A rental car is the line between two versions of Serbia. The first version is urban and straightforward: Belgrade, Novi Sad, maybe a planned day trip, with buses, trains, walking and the occasional taxi doing the work. The second version is wider and more textured: mountain viewpoints, river gorges, monasteries, small towns and roads where the schedule is not built around visitors. That version is often easier by car, but driving is not automatically romantic. Check licence and insurance requirements, think about winter or rural conditions, and avoid bringing a car into Belgrade unless it has a clear job. Rent for freedom, not because the map looks small.
