Are Wahiba / Sharqiya Sands desert camps worth it?
Yes, if you want the desert-night payoff and choose the logistics carefully. A camp can be touristy and still worthwhile; the mistake is treating dune access, driving and comfort level as afterthoughts.
Answer
The desert camp version of Oman is not untouched wilderness, and that is fine if you know what you are buying. The reward is evening light, cooler air, open sand, a sky with room in it and the feeling that the route has changed register. The friction is access: vehicle choice, transfers, camp standards, heat and how much organised activity you actually want. Do not add a camp because every itinerary has one. Add it because a night in the sand is part of the trip you want.
