Give KL more than a night if food, markets, architecture and easy logistics matter to you. It may not be Malaysia’s softest city, but it is the hinge that makes the rest of the trip easier.

Kuala Lumpur does not have one obvious centre to stay in. For most first visits, Bukit Bintang is the easiest place to come back to each day: food, shopping and plenty of evening life are close to the hotel, while rail and Grab cover trips elsewhere. KLCC is better if you want the Petronas Towers and park on your doorstep; Pasar Seni/Chinatown puts you among older streets, markets and casual food; KL Sentral/Brickfields makes the most sense when airport or onward rail connections are unusually important.

Give Penang enough time for more than one food crawl and a mural walk. Two nights gives you a taste; three or four lets George Town, markets, heat breaks and the wider island start to make sense.

Stay in George Town if food, walking and heritage are the point. Stay by the beach if rest matters more, but do not pretend the beach version gives the same Penang that people praise.

Choose Sarawak instead when Kuching, Mulu’s caves, food and cultural context are central to the trip. Sabah takes more planning than its headline attractions suggest; Sarawak is less compelling for a wildlife-first or beach-led itinerary. Neither state works well as a rushed add-on.
